Romance and Whimsy: Styled Shoot with Sweet Root Village

I recently got a chance to collaborate on a beautiful shoot with the creative and talented ladies of Sweet Root Village. These images were featured yesterday on Style Me Pretty, but I just wanted to highlight some of my favorites, which were super hard to choose because they’re all so pretty! <3

I don’t wear red too often but here I am wearing red. And black too, but red. Not sure if you are aware, but a sweet family lost their little boy in a terrible accident a few days ago. I don’t know them personally, but their story has gone viral on Instagram. He had the most beautiful red curly hair. You can read about it here and here. This is just one sweet boy, and I know that people lose loved ones everyday, but this one hit home since his mom is a blogger like myself, and he reminded me so much of my Levi. So full of life, attitude and fearlessness…

Anyways, I’m hugging my little ones a little tighter and longer these days. I am so completely thankful for each moment I get to see and make new memories with my babies. On Mother’s day, a great number of bloggers and the online community will be releasing red balloons in his memory. Such a gesture of love and support for this little family.

Rest in peace little Ryan.

Dude, where’s my sweater?

I love how people on the west coast are happily sporting their summer clothes. Shorts, tank tops and bikinis…and I’m all, dude! Where’s my sweater? Seriously! I appreciate the few warm days we got over the weekend, although I spent most of them inside. But this week is just gloomy! A sweater in a sunny color can help brighten a cold and rainy day.

The ever so gorgeous Andee Layne inspired me to buy these flared jeans and I’ve worn them before on this post. Mine are a bit long so I don’t wear them often since they require platforms, otherwise I’d wear them EVERY DAY! Just love the way they lengthen legs :).

Bombshell Blogger Series

Photographer Susannah of Unveil by Alumbra and I have teamed up to do a new editorial series inspired by famous beauty and style icons featuring some of DC’s favorite bloggers. Fashion blogger Cheralee Lyle of Miss Lyle Style knows a thing or two about the subject of beauty and she shares her secrets and advice with you! Plus, she has the most lovely South African accent, so we listen to every word she says!

First of all, who is your style icon and why?  I’ve always loved Brigitte Bardot’s personal style. That effortless chic look that somehow looks casual and put together at the same time.

Claudia Schiffer is definitely a modern Brigitte Bardot. What makes Claudia so iconic and appealing to you? When I was younger I would love to look at Claudia Schiffer’s magazine editorials and especially the ads she did for Guess. The big blonde hair, smoldering make up and retro styling was just perfect! That look will always be the epitome of glamour to me.

What’s your go-to makeup look for a night out with the girls? Lately I have been really into big lashes! I am finally perfecting my false eyelash technique (it’s taken a few years). I think it is such a fun dramatic look for a night out. Paired with a bold lip color like red or a bright rose pink. I love Maybeline Lip Elixers because they are like a balm/lipstick/lipgloss hybrid in a stunning range of color.

I’ll have to try that out! What’s one beauty product you can’t live without? Too Faced’s natural eyeshadow palette, seriously the best palette ever.

What’s your favorite lipstick? My everyday go to is “Lovelorn” by MAC. It’s a pretty pink shade that’s moisturizing but just enough color.

Do you have a beauty secret or trick you’d like to share? I curl my hair with a straightener, is that a trick? I swear by GHD flat irons!

What is your favorite part about being a fashion blogger? Making amazing friends in the industry and getting access to cool new brands and beauty products, I feel very lucky!

What’s one thing you think young women should do more of? Take care of your skin! Got to protect your face properly from the sun and use good, natural products. Check the ingredients in your face wash, it’s scary what harsh chemicals they can put in there. I have been using the CereVe range everyday and I love it, such a clean product.

What is something simple that makes you happy? Taking a moment to myself in the morning. I put on some happy music, eat some breakfast, drink my tea and plan my day. And catching up on news if there’s time.

Thank you so much Cheralee for agreeing to be our muse for a day!

Crop Top Worn Two Ways

I’m sure there is a fashion rule out there that says you’re not supposed to wear cropped tops and mini skirts after age 30…but I’ve never really been good at following rules! Seriously though, it’s good to do something different every now and then. Now I don’t think the crop top works all the time. But if you pair it with a high-waisted skirt, or shorts like I did here, or high-waisted pants, it’s a bit more forgiving in the midsection and not so showy. Flirty, but not over the top.

For a more relaxed look, I paired my top with a hooded vest and my favorite boots, which my friend Pam calls my wrestling shoes :).

This One Thing – Mirabella Lip Pencils

Hey there!

The other day I received a nice gift in the mail and I wanted to share it with you because I truly liked this product! Mirabella lip pencils are super-sized lip pencils that are very moisturizing and long lasting. I love the concept of a chunky lip pencil because it marries the moisturizing quality of a lipstick with the precision of a pencil into one! If you don’t have a steady hand, or have trouble getting your lipstick to look perfect, this is a really easy way to go!

photo 1 photo 2Blush Velvet is a fuschia color with a hint of purple, and will literally work on every skin tone. Not to mention a perfect color for Valentine’s Day. Both Blush Velvet and Sweet Velvet are just great colors for the Spring season. Mirabella lip pencils retail for $23.00 and come in six shades.

Winter Layers

Hey friends! I have some exciting news! I am teaming up with a very talented lady who also happens to be one of my favorite people, Susannah of Alumbra Photography, to bring you some high quality style blog posts every month. You’ve seen her work before on my blog as she took my family photos and some great boudoir/fashion-y photos too! Now, here’s the deal. I just love fashion and I really love looking at fashion blogs. Some people watch Dancing with the Stars, some watch ESPN, some play CandyCrush. However, I love spending my downtime looking at fashion magazines and fashion blogs. The thing I haven’t figured out yet is how bloggers can afford to have several new outfits a week, and still have money to pay for all their expenses, which in my case is Diego, Levi and Mateo (cause kids = lots of expenses, ya’ll!) And uhm, yea, I gotta fund that IRA too. So, there will be a lot of mixing and matching the same pieces (over and over) but in new ways, and cute looks at a great price, and things you can wear around kids, and things you really shouldn’t, and all that good stuff! And finally, I will be putting to good use all my days collecting and staring at magazines.

It can be a bit hard to look fashionable in really cold temperatures because all I want to do is wear my eskimo jacket to stay warm and call it a day. But a cute alternative is just to layer several tops. Here I wore a plaid shirt with a sweater vest and a moto jacket on top. And I was very warm! These boyfriend jeans are my favorite, as they give a very relaxed look and are super roomy. Perfect for a mom on the go!

A little bit of us in DC

photo (82)

Over the weekend, Pablo and I got a chance to stay at the historic Willard Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue. Maybe it was the beautiful weather or just the fabulous location of the hotel, but I fell in love with DC again. The Willard sits in view of the White House, the Washington Monument and walking distance from some awesome retail shops. My favorite moments from the weekend included dinner and dancing at Cuba Libre, trying on some beautiful things at Zara, and laying out by the Lincoln Memorial reflective pool listening to Sara Baraeilles :).

Cherry Blossom Sunday

On Sunday, we (and everyone else in the whole DMV area) headed to DC for a picnic near the Cherry Blossoms. The flowers weren’t quite as blossomed as we were hoping probably due to our crazy weather (I think we skipped right over spring, hello 80 degrees!). We did find the ONE tree that had blossomed…and well it was indeed beautiful.blog_cherryblossom.jpg blog_pabloandlevis.jpgblog_levianddadblog_levi3.jpg

Remember when playing with dirt and sticks was like, so fun?!

hi there, handsome!

blog_tree.jpgLevi had the BEST time roaming the Washington Monument grounds and pointing at the flying kites. I don’t think he’s experienced such freedom…I mean he really hasn’t gotten out much since I’ve been pregnant and hibernating for most of his life. He did such a great job that whole day! Matty on the other hand was a bit grumpy to be in the stroller and cried a lot…C’est la vie!

P.S. I’ve decided that the must have summer shoe is a pair white tennis. I recently got the white Converse pictured above at T.J. Maxx for $20.00 and I’ve been wearing them with dresses, jeans, shorts…everything!

Looking forward to more trips to D.C. this summer!
